For the past 25 years, I’ve followed a life calling to be of service. This took me first to the study and practice of Buddhism, to grad school in Contemplative Psychotherapy (Naropa University, 2005), and then on to a deep study and application of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). One common thread that runs through this path is the basic wisdom that to truly free ourselves from the traps of our mental anguish, we must start by accepting where we are and commit deeply to the values and purpose we truly wish to serve.
I have been a practicing psychotherapist in Boulder, CO since 2004. I currently provide clinical supervision to graduate student interns at the Naropa Community Counseling Center and I work directly with clients in my private practice. My individual clients are coming to me seeking support in their struggles with anxiety, depression, lack of purpose, or basically disconnected from vitality and fulfillment. I also work as a coach for parents of adolescents and young adults who need guidance in supporting their kids towards successful launch; and with couples who are struggling to find their way back to intimacy and partnership. My work weaves together the science of cutting edge behavioral therapies - Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Functional Analytic Psychotherapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, and other third wave CBT - and practical wisdom derived from my background in Buddhism.
For the past twenty five years, I’ve found great strength and wisdom in teachings that are over twenty-five hundred years old. The Buddha began his teachings on how to be a decent human being with a simple and somewhat paradoxical observation: In our search for genuine peace and happiness, it is ultimately futile to focus our efforts on trying to avoid suffering. To live in time – where circumstances constantly change and events happen to us over which we have no control – with a goal of finding peace and fulfillment, we must first learn to step back from the battle within our own minds.
I wish to help you step back from the battle within yourself. I will offer you a real and genuine relationship and will provide skills and guidance to cultivate more connection, compassion and peace within yourself so that you may bring forth the values and strength you have to offer in this precious life.
